The Art and Science of Guacamole | From Poster to Product
An infographic, a t-shirt, and a working app, one concept stretched.
A self-initiated exploration of information design, illustration, and the question of how far a single concept can stretch.
Starting with a subject I know and love, guacamole. I developed a detailed infographic covering etymology, selection, technique, and recipe. The illustration style draws on vintage culinary print design with some modern touches while keeping the hierarchy clear and scannable. From there, the concept extended naturally into merchandise, the old slap it on a t-shirt trick: the avocado cross-section on the front, the recipe on the back. Fun.
Then I asked a different question: what if the recipe wasn't static at all? The Guacamole Calculator is a working web app built from the same illustration system, scale the recipe from a couple of avocados to a full party, build a shopping list, check things off as you shop. It's a small piece of software, but it's also a real lesson in product thinking: how a static design decision (an ingredient list, a quantity) becomes an interactive one, and what breaks or needs rethinking when it does.
Personal projects are where I find out what I actually think about design and this one took me further than I expected, from screen printing posters to writing the logic for a slider.
